Lies, damn lies, and truth

The following is from the website of "LEAC" one of the relatively recent additions to the plethora of hate groups aimed at the Episcopal Church.

1. The American Episcopal Church has abandoned Christianity.

2. The Anglican Communion remains our Christian home.

4. LEAC needs your prayers, your donations and your talents TODAY.

5. You are invited to join LEAC in this essential holy work."

Which brings to mind the Mark Twain observation that there are lies, damn lies and statistics. At least they did not offer any statistics.

A damn lie is of course the idea that TEC has abandoned Christianity. In fact, nothing could be less true and the authors know it. What the church has done is to refuse to endorse the prejudices of LEAC as an essential or even acceptible part of the faith.

A lie? The "Anglican Communion" was defined at the last Lambeth conference as a fellowship considering becoming a church. It is, in plain fact, at this moment, a loose community of provinces. The Windsor report which LEAC pays no particullar attention to when it proposes a new province, and courts the AMIA, suggests steps toward becoming a church. The Episcopal and Canadian churches were extant before the idea of an "Anglican Communion" was born. They are in fact, the "home" if one exists.

Another lie? LEAC arose from the same IRDC funded Chapman memo described strategy of attacking TEC wherever and however possible, no matter the morality involved. IRDC is a political organization that seeks to force religous institutions to adopt its view of a theocratic, right wing state. LEAC became a tactical need when right wing clerics found the abandonment canon an uncomfortable reality.

The last two points are at truth. They do need prayers. We all do. And they need money, IRDC spawns its minions and stops funding them.

So there we have it, damn lies, and truth but no statistics. I think one can not have a mere lie when doing such violence to the body of Christ.
