"TRENTON, NEW JERSEY - Gov. Jon Corzine signed into law Monday a measure that abolishes the death penalty, making New Jersey the first state in 42 years to reject capital punishment.
The bill replaces the death sentence with life in prison without parole. "
It is not every day we find California,Illinois and other allegedly progressive States, solidly behind New Jersey. I fear my mid-western prejudice making it hard to think of New Jersey as morally superior to my home. But there it is.
"Hooo ray" for New Jersey!
Which leads to a question: Why is it so many who favor the death penalty claim to be "pro-life?"
December 19th... And this just in from a story about the UN's request for a death penalty moritorium:
A total of 133countries, from all regions of the world, have abolished the death penaltyin law or practice and only 25 countries carried out executions in 2006. 91%of all known executions took place in six countries: China, Iran, Iraq,Pakistan, Sudan and the USA.

Well some lives is clearly more sacred than others in the sight of man.
Unborn babies, by which we ought to say embrios and foetuses, play better than than the hardened criminal in the conservative religion polls, I guess.
